Burnout: a universal creative feeling. By this point I was reaching the end of my time with Patreon, getting strung out with the need to always be productive and create more around a crappy retail work sketched pushed me to burn out.
I hadn't painted in months, art was becoming another chore that I wanted to avoid. In attempts to return to what I love about making art, I wanted to focus on painting again. Like I had done 10 years ago when starting art school, I eased by self back into painting with a limited color palette.  For this project, the palette was determined for me by a Yasutomo Sumi-e watercolor set that I had yet to really experiment with.

Scopes was also an attempt to let my patrons become more intimate with my art supplies and illustrative process. The zine carries this theme with spreads focusing entirely on the watercolor set and brushes used, because just like my art, these supplies have become an extension of me and how I express myself.

While I put the original characters from Mer (2016) on the back burner, I decided to dip my toes back into mermaid character design.

This time instead of a mer-naga, we have Tav the mer-octopus and Rib the mer-ribbon eel. They  were posted on my Patreon in hopes to create episodic mer-related comics.

They have yet to feature in more comics, but their designs and comic will end up featuring in my Sapphic zine later on.

The Double D's have yet to be brought back, and that really is a shame.

Mer started as a MerMay project that was reformatted into a zine for my first time selling at a con.
I wouldn't call it the most successful of conversions, considering the tools I was dealing with: doing pagination and creating PDFs using google docs, printing on an off-set office copier, and trying to fold, assemble, and staple all the books  myself - It at least succeeded at being a learning experience!

The end physical result wasn't quite as pristine as professionally printed zines, but I still love the characters and often thing of reviving them into a proper zine.

3 years later, and I am still proud of this accomplishment.
               Baby's first zine!
I don't know how I managed to complete this during one of the most stressful times for retail shipping (my job at the time) but I did it! And I am still proud of that fact!  Even if, getting real here, actual tears were involved in the making of this zine, it was an undertaking I set out to do and was able finish thanks to all the encouragement and help I received from my Dragon Age fandom pals . ♥
